Taiwan’s opposition leader, Cheng Li-wun, has expressed her openness to meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump during her forthcoming visit to the United States. Cheng underscored her readiness to engage with any leader capable of contributing to regional peace and stability, highlighting the importance of dialogue with influential global figures in promoting peace.
Before embarking on her two-week trip, Cheng mentioned that her willingness to meet Trump aligns with the diplomatic approach she took in her recent meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping. While in the United States, Cheng plans to meet U.S. lawmakers and government officials, including during a scheduled stop in Washington. However, she refrained from disclosing specific details about her meetings.
Cheng also expressed optimism regarding the recent improvements in U.S.-China relations, hoping that increased dialogue between major powers would help alleviate regional tensions. She emphasized that fostering communication is essential to reducing the risk of military conflict and maintaining stability, particularly across the Taiwan Strait.
Regarding Taiwan’s security policy, Cheng asserted the significance of bolstering defense capabilities. However, she argued that enduring security is equally dependent on communication with Beijing. Her visit occurs amid ongoing debates in Taiwan on defense spending and cross-strait relations, with opposition parties advocating for a balance between military readiness and diplomatic engagement.
