Google is set to revolutionize its renowned search engine by integrating advanced artificial intelligence, as announced at the Google I/O conference. This major update will enable the search bar to handle longer and more natural queries, aiming to mimic human-like conversations rather than its traditional syntax. The incorporation of Google’s latest AI model, Gemini 3.5, will allow users to interact directly with a chatbot, providing a new dimension to their search experience. This overhaul, described by Elizabeth Reid, head of Google Search, as the most significant in nearly 30 years, will roll out globally across desktop and mobile platforms.
The new AI-driven search will not only predict longer text inputs but will also present more visual data and interactive suggestions. Users can leverage these features to initiate actions within Google’s suite, like scheduling events or managing spreadsheets. Although the search results will appear more visually enriched, users can still opt for the traditional link-based format by selecting a “Web” tab. Reid highlighted that search queries recently reached record levels, and since the introduction of the “AI Mode” a year ago, interactions with the Gemini-powered chatbot have seen exponential growth.
Further enhancing its AI capabilities, Google aims to develop a “universal assistant” through Gemini, as explained by Josh Woodward, the model’s overseer. While the Gemini app attracts 900 million monthly users, it lags behind ChatGPT’s weekly user base. The integration of AI agents into Google’s search service signals a shift from a niche tech-savvy audience to broader consumer engagement. Subscribers of the AI Pro and Ultra plans will have access to “information agents,” autonomous bots that conduct in-depth research and provide users with actionable summaries. Additionally, the “generative user interface” will create tailored visuals, and “Gemini Spark” will utilize personal Google data for comprehensive planning and research.
In a move echoing its earlier attempts with Google Glass, Google is re-entering the smart eyewear market. Partnering with Samsung and eyewear brands Warby Parker and Gentle Monster, the tech giant unveiled a line of “intelligent eyewear” slated for a fall release. These glasses will feature voice command capabilities and built-in cameras, aligning with a trend seen in Meta’s collaboration with EssilorLuxottica on Ray-Ban Meta glasses. Google’s previous venture, Google Glass, faced criticism and ceased production shortly after its 2014 launch. However, with changing perceptions, augmented-reality glasses are being seen as a growth opportunity, prompting Google to also work on a second smart glasses model, dubbed Project Aura.
