In a leaked audio recording from a private fundraiser, U.S. Vice President JD Vance reportedly made light of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s strategy in trade discussions with President Donald Trump. Vance referred to Carney as a “very sweet guy,” but criticized his efforts to “out-tough” Trump, suggesting that Canada had conceded on several issues during these negotiations.
This development comes at a time when the United States and Canada are actively working towards a potential trade agreement. President Trump has previously threatened to impose substantial tariffs of 50% on Canadian goods. The negotiations may lead to an arrangement where Canada agrees to let U.S. alcohol products return to Canadian store shelves in exchange for avoiding the imposition of these high tariffs.
The implementation of these tariffs was initially set for August 19. However, President Trump announced a three-day postponement. According to the White House, the proposed tariffs are a response to what it perceives as discriminatory practices against U.S. alcohol sales in Canada.
There has been a noticeable decline in Canadian imports of U.S. alcohol, prompting discussions among provincial leaders about reintroducing American products to store shelves in Canada. Nevertheless, some Canadian politicians are urging consumers to continue supporting domestic products, even amidst the possibility of a new trade agreement.
