President Donald Trump has proposed involving himself in a new Department of Justice initiative aimed at rewarding whistleblowers who report fraud involving the federal government. Announcing the program alongside Vice-President JD Vance, Trump suggested that he could personally mediate disputes when multiple individuals provide information on the same alleged fraud, determining who should receive financial rewards.
The Department of Justice, however, retains the exclusive authority to make final decisions on reward allocations under the program. The initiative offers financial incentives of up to $30,000 for information that leads to criminal charges, aiming to bolster efforts to uncover and address fraud involving government funds and operations.
Vice-President Vance highlighted that the program seeks to expand opportunities for whistleblowers beyond the existing False Claims Act, which allows individuals to receive a portion of financial recoveries in certain fraud cases pursued by the government. The new initiative is designed to address a broader range of fraud types and provide compensation at an earlier stage in investigations.
Trump also floated the idea that whistleblowers might receive a share of the uncovered fraud, potentially earning significant sums. However, the Justice Department’s guidelines for the pilot program cap rewards at $30,000.
In his announcement, Trump encouraged journalists to take part in the initiative, noting that members of the media could qualify for rewards if their employers permitted participation. The overall goal of the program is to enhance efforts to detect fraud and hold wrongdoers accountable. Yet, questions remain regarding how disputes over rewards will be resolved and the specifics of the program’s payment rules.
