Iran has issued a stark warning that any renewed military conflict with the United States could be more prolonged than previous engagements, amidst rising tensions and uncertainty over Middle East diplomacy. This caution follows remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump, who suggested that the U.S. might still target sites within Iran if necessary.
Mohammad Akraminia, a spokesperson for the Iranian army, noted that the duration and conclusion of any future conflict would not be under U.S. control. This statement came after President Trump hinted at the possibility of striking additional targets in Iran, specifically mentioning Pickaxe Mountain, an alleged underground nuclear facility.
Amid these developments, Trump disclosed that he had discussed the situation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Their discussions reportedly revolved around ongoing negotiations and potential military actions. Israel is said to be advocating for renewed strikes post the November 3 U.S. midterm elections, while the U.S. contemplates whether to focus on diplomatic solutions.
Iran’s military response has been firm, with Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps spokesperson Hossein Mohebbi indicating that any conflict could extend geographically, implying a wider regional impact. Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi emphasized the need for diplomacy but affirmed Iran’s readiness for both defense and negotiations.
Adding a diplomatic twist, Iran’s security chief Mohsen Rezaei mentioned receiving a letter from U.S. Vice President JD Vance seeking to restart diplomatic talks. Although Rezaei acknowledged a change in Washington’s stance, he noted that Tehran has yet to respond.
Iran has laid out conditions for renewed negotiations, including the release of frozen assets, lifting of naval blockades, removal of sanctions, and an end to regional hostilities. The Strait of Hormuz remains a focal point of tension, with Iran maintaining shipping restrictions and the U.S. enforcing a naval blockade.
The United Arab Emirates has expressed hope for a diplomatic resolution but cautioned that regional readiness for further escalation is necessary. UAE diplomatic adviser Anwar Gargash noted that additional conflict would not benefit regional interests, highlighting the precarious balance between continued military threats and diplomatic efforts.
