Dena Karari, a dual US-Iranian citizen, has been released by Iran after being detained since December 2024. The announcement was made by US President Donald Trump, who stated that Karari is “now safely outside of Iran, and in good condition.” Trump characterized her release as a gesture of goodwill from Iran.
Karari’s legal representative, Jared Genser, confirmed her safe return journey to the United States, attributing her release to the efforts of the Trump administration. Karari was initially detained after traveling to Iran in 2024 to visit her family, only to be prevented from leaving the country.
The situation escalated following US and Israeli military actions against Iran in 2025, leading Iranian authorities to charge Karari with espionage. Her release marks a significant development amid ongoing tensions between the US and Iran.
